Child-friendly intercessions

FLOWER & WATER PRAYERS

Draw a flower template (about palm-sized) on a piece of paper. The petals should not be longer than the diameter of the central circle of the flower. Cut out the flower. Write or draw a prayer onto one side of it, and then fold the petals in so that they overlap each other. Make sure the creases are really sharp. Now float your folded flower in water and it will open, revealing your prayer in a rather beautiful and cool way.

PICTURE INTERCESSIONS
This works in a similar way to the Eucharistic Prayer pictures, but this time select some images that reflect themes or items that are often featured in the intercessions. Print out the images, laminate them, and make them available to families in their pews, or in a children’s area if you have one.  Looking through the images as the prayers are heard can help bring the words to life.
You can add new pictures every so often, and remove old ones, and even add new pictures specific to the occasion, for particular seasons of the year or if your service has a special theme (for instance if you have a visiting preacher from a charity or mission agency).
Here is a starter set, including some images that are local to the church in question (you could add your own local school logo, map, etc) and some that were specific to the occasion (visit from Peru-based USPG missionary):

“HANDS OF GOD” PRAYERS

In our prayers today,
we put all thoughts and worries and hopes
into the hands of God.
You may like to hold your own hands
in front of you as you pray.

We place into the hands of God
the life of this church,
the people around us,
and those who are not here today.

We place into the hands of God
our difficulties and frustrations,
and our hopes and our worries about the future.

We place into the hands of God
the life of the church in all the world,
all people in the world who bring God’s love to others,
all people who are in danger
because they share the love of God.

Loving God, as you have blessed us,
make us a blessing to your world.

Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

We place into the hands of God
a world that needs peace,
a world that needs wisdom,
a world that needs healing.

We place into the hands of God
the leaders of every nation,
the poor of our own and every land,
those who live in fear,
and all who hold the lives of others in their hands.

Loving God,
You have poured such love into your world.
Show us how to help make it a more loving place.

Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

We place into the hands of God
our families, our friends, and our neighbours,
those who live and work in our village,
in our shops and local businesses,
those who work from home,
those who are unemployed,
and all who pass through the village on their travels.

We place into the hands of God
all those we know who are suffering.
We name………………….

Loving God,
Bless them with your love and comfort and healing.
And show us how to care for them.

Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

We place into the hands of God
all those who have died.
We name…………
And from our memorial book: ………………………

Loving God,
As you prepared a place for each of them,
prepare us for our place with you,
when we will be held in your loving hands for ever.

Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Merciful Father,
Accept these prayers,
for the sake of your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

 PRAYERS FOR TRINITY SUNDAY

Lord God,
You are bigger than the universe
and more powerful than we can imagine.
You are so close to us that we can’t see you,
but we know that you are with us.
We thank you for everything
that is amazing and beautiful.
And we also pray about all the things
we don’t understand
and all the things we wish were different.

Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

Lord God,
Your world is a big and wonderful place
and you asked us to care for it.
But sometimes the troubles of the world
seem too big for us.
We don’t know how to stop the fighting
we don’t know how to feed all the hungry,
and we don’t know how to live
without all the things
that are harming the planet.
Make us more careful,
more generous,
and more peaceful.

Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

Lord God,
Your church is a place of teaching,
worship, friendship, and care.
But we don’t always understand
the arguments that can divide us.
Bind your people together,
bind your church together,
And make us one
as you are one.

Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

Lord God,
Thank you for everything that is good
about our life together in this community,
and help us to care for one another,
to be good neighbours, and good friends.
We think of those close to us who are in need,
and we don’t understand
why they have to suffer.
But we ask you to bless them,
and love them, as we love them.
We name those who have asked
for our prayers…………

Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

Lord God,
Thank you for the love
that binds us together in life
and that lasts for ever, even when we die.
Thank you for the people
who have shared our lives
but who now live in heaven…………………..

Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

FISHING FOR PEOPLE PRAYERS

Heavenly Father,
Your Son taught his disciples to fish for people.
We pray for your church.
Help us to carry on the work of Jesus and his friends,
following in the footsteps of all faithful people
and bringing the world the good news of your love.

Lord, in your mercy      Hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father,
Your Son was a king whose friends were ordinary people.
We pray for the leaders of the world,
that you would give them wisdom
and courage to make good decisions.
We pray for the people of the world,
especially those who live in poverty
or in fear, or in conflict.

Lord, in your mercy      Hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father,
Your Son came to bring hope and healing,
freedom and friendship.
Bless all those we know who are suffering.
Among those who have asked for our prayers
we name…….

Lord, in your mercy      Hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father,
Your Son went ahead of us,
dying, rising and showing us the way to heaven.
We thank you for all those  who have gone before us.
Those who shared our journey of life,
those who showed us how to live,
those who taught us our faith,
and especially those we love but see no longer.
Among those who have died recently
we remember……….
And from our memorial book:…………………….

Lord, in your mercy      Hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that you have always been faithful to us
in every generation.
Help us to share our love for you
and our faith in you
with those around us,
today and always.
Merciful Father, Accept these prayer for the sake of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

PAPER CHAIN PRAYERS

In our prayers today
we will be making paper chains
to thank God for the ways
that we are all connected with each other
in St Mary’s, in our local area, and all over the world.

Heavenly Father
we pray for the places in the world
where there is more hatred than love,
where there is more conflict than peace,
where there is more suffering than comfort.
Thank you for the people who give their lives
to help make your world a better place.

Please write or draw on your paper strips
a word or picture that reminds you of
how much the world needs love……………..

Lord in your mercy
Hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father
we pray for a church that is often divided
and distracted from what really matters.
Help us to treat each other well,
and to remember that we are all your children,
part of your family not just in St Mary’s
but with all your faithful people
all over the world.

Please write or draw on your paper strips
a word or picture that reminds you of
how much the church needs love……………………..

Lord in your mercy
Hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father
thank you for everything that makes this community special:
a good place to live and work.
Bless all those who are struggling because of illness,
or because they are lonely,
or because the people they love are far away.
Help us to be good neighbours.

We name out loud those who have asked for our prayers……

Please write or draw on your paper strips
a word or picture that reminds you of
how much the local community needs love…………………

Lord in your mercy
Hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father
We thank you that love is stronger than death
and that our love for those close to us
does not end when they die.
We ask you to welcome all who have died
into your loving arms in heaven.

We remember those who have died recently:…………….
And those from our memorial book:…………..
And all those we still love
even though we cannot see them any more.

Please write or draw on your paper strips
a name of someone you want to remember
or a picture of them.

Lord in your mercy
Hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father
Thank you that your love
is bigger than all our sadness,
stronger than all the conflict in the world,
and lasts longer than all the divisions between people.
Give us your gifts of love, hope and faith
so that we may share them
with one another and the world.

Now peel the backing off your sticky tape
and join up your paper strip with your neighbours’
to make a big paper chain………….

Merciful Father
Accept these prayers
For the sake of your Son
Our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
